Sound familiar?
  • “You can feel recruiting changing, but nobody has written down what the new job actually is.”
  • “Job ads for talent engineers ask for Python, APIs and AI agents, and you are not sure where to start.”
  • “You have tried AI tools on your own, and they stop where the real work begins, at the people.”
  • “Your desk wants the capability before competitors have it, and there is no one to hire for it yet.”

What changes for your desk

What talent engineers do, what the companies hiring them ask for, the skills and tools to learn, and a 30-day plan to build your first recruiting system.

  • A role the market is paying for

Companies from seed-stage AI startups to Gong and Anduril are hiring talent engineers. You learn the job they are describing, in the order that matters.

  • Skills you can show, not claim

Every week of the plan ends in something you built and ran on a real role. That is what hiring managers in this space ask to see.

  • Weeks, not a year of courses

Plain-English prompts run the data, signals and contact layers from day one, so you learn the system before you learn to code it.

  • One seat that lifts the whole desk

For agencies, one talent engineer gives every recruiter the same market maps, signals and scored lists, before you hire the next recruiter.

Before and after the playbook

Today
  • Waiting for applicants and posting the same job ad again
  • Searching one database by job title and opening profiles one by one
  • A different tool for data, contact details and outreach, copied between tabs
  • Every search starting from zero
With the playbook
  • A market map for the role before the first search
  • Move signals that tell you who to call this week, and why
  • One workbench for data, contact details, outreach and the ATS
  • A system that runs every week and gets sharper with each search

One workbench runs the stack a talent engineer is hired to build.

Three moves the playbook sets up

Each one is a play you run from the same conversation. The playbook gives you the prompt, the settings and what to do when a list misses.

01

Map the market before you search

Size the pool, see which companies hold the people you need and whether the brief is realistic, before you spend money or an hour on it.

02

Time it with move signals

Layoffs, acquisitions, new leaders and long tenure tell you who is likely to move now. A talent engineer calls them first, with a reason.

What's in the playbook

9 chapters, from the first idea to a system you run every week.

  1. 01

What a talent engineer actually does

The definition the people in the seat use, and how the role differs from recruiting ops and sourcing.

  2. 02

Who is hiring, and what they pay

14 live job ads read line by line, with the salary bands, the skills they rank and the tools they name.

  3. 03

The six systems a talent engineer runs

Market maps, move signals, rediscovery, scored lists, outreach and measurement, with what each one replaces.

  4. 04

    Score yourself

A six-skill scorecard you score 0 to 3, and a prompt that interviews you and tells you what to learn first.

  5. 05

    The stack, layer by layer

Eight layers of tools, what to learn first in each, and which ones need code.

  6. 06

    Three ways into the role

From recruiting, from GTM engineering and from running an agency, with people who made each move.

  7. 07

Your first build, end to end

Six copy-paste prompts that take one live role from market map to a scored list in your ATS.

  8. 08

    Your first 30 days

A week-by-week plan, and the numbers to track so you can prove the system works.

  9. 09

    The rules and the traps

GDPR, LinkedIn's terms, the EU AI Act, and the mistakes practitioners warn about most.

The first prompt
Claude or ChatGPT prompt

Use hyreflow and map the market for [role] in [location]. Tell me how many people fit, which companies they work at, and which of them show a reason to move right now, such as a layoff, an acquisition or a long time in seat. Score the top 20 against my must-haves with the evidence quoted, and show me the list before you look up any contact details.

Who it's for

  • Recruiters and sourcers who want to build the machine, not compete with it
  • GTM engineers moving their skills into hiring
  • Agency owners who want one talent engineer before the next recruiter
  • Talent leaders scoping their first talent engineer hire

What you need

  • Claude or ChatGPT. In Claude, use Opus
  • A free hyreflow account
  • One live role, or a role you filled recently, to practise on
  • About 30 minutes a day for 30 days

Is talent engineer a real job title yet?

Yes. We found 14 open listings on 23 October 2026 with talent engineer or a close variant in the title, at companies including SuperAnnotate, Gong, Profound, Glide and Bobyard. a16z also runs a talent engineer fellowship. We did not coin the term.

Do I need to know how to code?

Not to start. Most builder roles ask for some Python or API work, and the plan tells you when it starts to pay off. With hyreflow, the data, signal, contact and ATS layers run from plain-English prompts, so you can build and prove a system first.

Will a talent engineer replace recruiters?

No. A talent engineer builds the system that gives recruiters better people to call, and in many roles also runs the calls and closes. The judgment and the conversations stay human.

Is this only for in-house recruiting?

No. In an agency, the talent engineer runs both funnels with one setup, because the data that qualifies a client also qualifies a candidate.

Do I need accounts with LinkedIn, Apollo or other data tools?

No. The people databases and contact-data providers are built into hyreflow. It never logs into LinkedIn, so there is no account risk.

Which assistant should I use?

Claude or ChatGPT. In Claude, use Opus. A small, fast model skips steps and returns weak lists.
